  1. Welcome to the citizen security database!

The citizen security database is the largest collection of past and ongoing public security and safety programs and projects available in Latin America and the Caribbean (more than 1,300 interventions in more than 19 countries between 1998 and 2013).

The citizen security database allows users to interact with large quantities of complex data. Not only does it provide a macro-level trends and patterns for all projects across time and space, but it also allows users to interact with the micro-data, providing information on the objectives, duration, budget, and coverage of discrete interventions.

This tour guide provides instructions about the tools available in this application. This tour will appear in the first visit to the website, and can be consulted anytime in the following link ***.

  2. Citizen security interventions can be plotted in a xy plane (horizontal and vertical), allowing the identification of patters across the available variables. For example, to plot interventions by country and strategy, you should follow the next steps:

    Select the variable country.

  3. Select the axis on which you want to place this variable, for example y axis. It is recommended to place the variables with more categories on the y axis for better visualization (e.g., country and start year).

You can filter the categories you want to include in the chart. If you do not select any of them, the chart will be made with all existing categories.

  4. Select update

  5. Select the second variable that you want to include in the chat, in this case strategies.

  6. Select the categories you want to include in the chart. if you do not select any of them, the chart will be made with all existing categories.

  7. Select update

Following these steps you'll get an interactive graph showing the number of interventions and strategies for each country. The colors of the small boxes represent the distribution by coverage (country, city, state and regional).

  8. The zoom tool allows you to enlarge the visualization of a group of interventions.

See the details of each intervention by clicking on each of the boxes.

  9. To see the distribution of the categories of each variable, select the percentage tool.

  10. You can choose the vertical percentage.

You can also choose horizontal percentage.
